Frequently Asked Questions

                                                                                                                                       Printer friendly FAQ
Question: How do I know which side to use?

Answer: Routine wound assessment includes evaluation of wound exudate and a plan to achieve a moist wound
environment. If drainage needs to be removed to create the optimal environment, the “Higher Drainage” option
should be used; if a wound needs hydration, the “Lower Drainage” option is more beneficial. Each dressing has
been printed for clarity.

Question: How long can SelectSilver be left in place?

Answer: SelectSilver dressings are commonly left on for up to 7 days. Secondary absorbent dressings should be changed more often if they become saturated without disturbing the wound bed.

Question: Can SelectSilver be cut to size?

Answer: SelectSilver was designed to be cut-to-size maintaining their physical integrity without shedding debris into the wound bed. To protect periwound skin from maceration, the SelectSilver dressing should overlap the wound edges.  A single dressing may also be used to treat multiple wounds on the same patient.

Question: Does SelectSilver adhere to the wound?

Answer: SelectSilver has a non-adherent coating and has been found to be non-adherent to most wounds. Using the dressing in the proper direction on wounds with less exudate also reduces the amount of adhesion.

Question: How do you secure SelectSilver?

Answer: SelectSilver may be secured with an adhesive secondary dressing, roll gauze, tape, or medical adhesive
depending on the anatomical location and periwound skin concerns.

Question: Should SelectSilver be pre-wet prior to application?

Answer: There is no need to pre-wet SelectSilver prior to application to draining wounds. SelectSilver may be pre-wet with saline solution, sterile water or wound gel for wounds requiring additional hydration.

Question:
Is SelectSilver compatible with wound cleansers and/or debriding agents?

Answer: SelectSilver performance has not been altered by any of the commercial wound cleansers tested, however it has been documented that silver can compromise the effectiveness of some debriding enzymes.

Question: Can I use SelectSilver to debride?

Answer: Some autolytic debridement of slough may occur when using SelectSilver resulting in thin film of residue under the dressing over time. If this is observed consider increasing the change frequency of the SelectSilver to ensure fluid management is not compromised. “Wet-to-Dry” techniques are not recommended.

Question: How does SelectSilver work under compression wraps?

Answer: Excellent Application! SelectSilver’s ability to partition fluid away from the patient prevents maceration over an extended period of time. Wounds with significant drainage may require an absorptive secondary dressing before applying a compression dressing.

Question: Can I use SelectSilver with Negative Pressure Therapy?

Answer: Yes. SelectSilver serves as an excellent wound contact layer or wick under negative pressure. No fenestration is required to move fluid through to the sponge layer.

Question: Can I use SelectSilver over skin grafts?

Answer: SelectSilver has produced favorable results in a limited number of cases. This application, primarily with regard to burns, is being studied further.
